Personal Analysis and Philosophy (Module 7)
This week’s material gave me a lot to think about. My current experiences in education are teaching undergrad music theater students and volunteering teaching ESL to a Sudanese writer so at first I got hung up on the differences, but when I finally chose to focus on one at a time, I found many similarities. After completing a Philosophy of Adult Education Inventory with a focus on my ESL work, I found that I scored highest in the Progressive category, with Behaviorist and Humanist distant seconds. When I thought about the questions for my work with undergrads, there was a bit more of a focus on the Behaviorist, but still a lot of similarities. This makes sense to me as music is often considered a language. The Behaviorist philosophy sees the learner as taking an active role in practicing new behaviors, which is essential for mastery of both language and music.
