Personal Analysis and Philosophy (Module 7)

This week’s material gave me a lot to think about.  My current experiences in education are teaching undergrad music theater students and volunteering teaching ESL to a Sudanese writer so at first I got hung up on the differences, but when I finally chose to focus on one at a time, I found many similarities.

After completing a Philosophy of Adult Education Inventory with a focus on my ESL work, I found that I scored highest in the Progressive category, with Behaviorist and Humanist distant seconds.  When I thought about the questions for my work with undergrads, there was a bit more of a focus on the Behaviorist, but still a lot of similarities.  This makes sense to me as music is often considered a language.  The Behaviorist philosophy sees the learner as taking an active role in practicing new behaviors, which is essential for mastery of both language and music.  The Progressive philosophy focuses on the idea that learner needs, interests and experiences are important in learning, and the Humanist stresses the self-direction and motivation of the learner.  These are also very important for language and music study.

I'm still very much in the process of developing and refining my own philosophy, but this week's material helped me both refine and broaden my ideas.  I feel like this module is very much a launching pad for more exploration of the subject.
